Recently, in a workshop, I was asked to write a professional mission statement. As a designer and professor I defined my mission as, “to create environments for stories to unfold whether real or fictional”. I then felt uncomfortably pretentious and refined it to “to plan and solve problems”.
I have been working as both a set designer and educator for over 20 years. I design plays, musicals, corporate theatre, and experiential spaces; I am also the Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts and a professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz. I have some of the most outstanding students you could imagine. Anyone who knows me would say I am nearly as committed to my work as I am to my family and dogs.
